June 24, 2016- Exploring Geiranger

After spending 12 hours in the car yesterday, I was looking forward to staying close to the hotel today.

After breakfast we drove into town and walked along the Fossevandring waterfall. It runs through the town at various levels and they've built a walking trail along it.

Our walk started at the top of the falls, so we ended up walking in the little town when we got to the bottom. Mike had read about this Sjokolade shop and its unique flavors.  In we went, with no hesitations from me.

We liked the Blue Cheese best over the Brown Cheese, Whiskey, and Olive Oil and Sea Salt.

For lunch, we got a recommendation from the guy in the chocolate shop. He suggested the Westeras Gard goat farm. It was up the mountain so after hiking back up the trail, (according to my Health app on my phone that tracks steps it was 15 floors) we hopped in the car to drive the rest of the way. It got quite interesting as we had to turn off the two lane paved road onto a one lane gravel road. It felt like we were driving where we shouldn't be. There were no guard rails on the outside, just a few big rocks here and there. My fear of heights kicked in and I'm pretty sure I said some not very nice things to Mike. But we made it to the restaurant and the view was spectacular.

Lunch- ham and goat cheese wrap for me and the dried meats platter for Mike.

We shared this chocolate fondant dessert with raspberry ice cream. We would call this a chocolate lava cake. It was yummy!

From here we continued up the mountain to an overlook (Flydalsjuvet ) that provided us with a view of the Geirangerfjord.  Stunning views here looking down on the town and back to the little farm we had just eaten lunch.

This might just be our Christmas card next year.  We're also loving our selfie stick #tourists

Back at the hotel, we spent an hour or so relaxing on our balcony and enjoying the view. It was fun to see the variety of boats go by.

Big ferry boats, smaller sight seeing boats, and small raft boats all share the waterways. And let's not forget about the huge cruise ships that come in and out of here.

Before dinner, we decided to walk down to the water and rent a kayak since they were so close to us. What a thrill this was!  No pictures though, we left the phones in our room. We were, however, in the water when the huge cruise ship left. I have to say, it was kind of spooky being such a tiny boat in the water with that huge one close by. But it did not make a big wake and it stayed on the far side of the fjord away from where we were so it caused no problem for us at all. As we were kayaking, a light fog moved in and then it began to rain. Lightly at first, but by the time we got back it was a heavy, steady rain. That didn't ruin our fun at all. I feel really lucky to be able to say I went kayaking in a Norwegian fjord.
