Sunday, October 23, 2016- Positano Day 3- Pompeii

First let's start with a picture from last night that didn't get put up here. Mike took this at twilight from our balcony.

This morning it was raining lightly. The weather forecast showed rain until 3:00. We de iced to relax in the morning and when it cleared up we would make the drive to Pompeii. Sure enough, around 1:30 the sun came out.

We decided to buy sandwiches, chips and drinks from a little market across the street for a picnic lunch on the way to the city.

While we were waiting for our car to be brought up, I took this picture of our hotel entrance.

The road was way too curvy to eat while driving, so once we got to Pompeii, we ate in the car before going to tour the ruins.

I was surprised by how large of an area the ruins took up. As we left, I took this picture of a map of the ancient city.

First stop was a 20,000 seat amphitheater.

Then we saw this beautiful garden that was part of the Praedia of Giulia Felice.

The House of Venus in the Shell

I was really surprised by how much artwork and color had been preserved on some of the walls. I also didn't expect to see these ruins surrounded by green grass, trees, and shrubs. It was a pleasant surprise.

The Stabian Baths

This was the main forum of Pompeii with Mt Vesuvius in the background. This was one of my favorite spots in the ruins.

I was amazed by the beauty and colors of this marble counter.

Sadly, this haunting exhibit of 13 victims is displayed in the Garden of the Fugitives. It is really an eerie sight.

To end on a more cheerful note, here's a beautiful picture of the main city center of modern Pompeii.

Tonight's our last night in Positano. Tomorrow we drive back to Rome where we will spend the last days of this vacation.
